Roman Medium Artillery - Catapults

Here is my first unit of medium artillery for the romans. Just as the scorpios of the previous post, these are also New Line Design's, except for the crew. These I'll be fielding 2 per unit.

The ammunition stones are manually made of epoxy, and that gives them a somewhat imperfect look which I believe makes them feel more natural to proxy a hand carved stone.

Next up is another unit of medium artillery, this time featuring also a ballista!

Roman Light Artillery - Scorpios

Here are my first pieces of artillery for my roman army. These are scorpios, by New Line Designs. The crew I used here is Caesar Miniatures, the same as those on my cohorts, for the crew that comes with the scorpio kit doesn't fit well with the rest of my romans - too heroic and bubble headed.

I'll be fielding them in units of 3, as this gives them a more impressive, epic look on the table.

I used the upper part of the pila of those legionaries to proxy some arrows for the scorpios, and I believe they turned out pretty decent.

Third Unit of Cavalry for the Romans - Praetorians

Here is the third unit of this first batch of cavalry I painted for my roman army. These guys are Hat Industries' Praetorian Cavalry, which are pretty close scuplts to those of the auxiliaries, except for the hexagonal shields and helmet crests.

I'm not entirely happy with the size of these units. 12 models seems pretty weak on the table, so I'll be getting another kit of auxiliary cavalry and splitting it into my existing units, so that both end up with with 18 models, which is my standard for medium sized units of horses.

The praetorians I may leave as they are, as it seems natural that such elite units come in small numbers, although I'll probably be fielding them as just another unit of auxilia for most games, rather than praetorians per si.

I'll also be painting a unit of Numidians, and after that I'll call it a day in regards to roman cavalry. It'll be time to move on to auxiliary infantry.

Second Unit of Roman Cavalry

Here is another unit of auxiliary cavalry from Hat Industries. These guys are painted pretty much like the other unit, except for their shields, which are red here, instead of green.

Auxiliary units allow me to do some distinct paint schemes, which is a nice way to make my romans more colorful on the table, but I wanted to have at least one unit of cavalry with red shields, anyway.
