Bavarian Chevauleger

Last week, I painted my first Bavarian unit. Bavaria is my favorite small german state for the Napoleonic period, their uniforms and helmets are very appealing. Those are Chevauleger, and will fight alongside my french.

I also painted another base for my French Old Guard Regiment, and now the unit is finnally complete. With that, I have enough french units to start playing(!). I still have some work to do on the British, though, and then I'll be able to start playing with my very own armies.

French Light Voltigeurs

Here are my French Light Infantry Voltigeurs. These models are Hat's, as are my Carabiniers à Pied, which featured here last week. They also come in 56 models a box.

I changed my initial plans of doing only 4 regimented bases and using the remaining models to do skirmishers. That would leave with way too many skirmishers, once I do the chasseurs. Instead, I did 6 regiment bases and only 4 skirmish bases. I rebased some carabiniers, as well, to match the voltigeurs disposition.

As I mentioned before, my plan at the long run is to build light regiments with one base of voltigeurs, one of carabiniers and 2 of chasseurs. Since I currently have 6 bases each of voltiguers and carabiniers, I'll be able to come up with 6 light regiments, eventually.

For now, since I still haven't painted any chasseurs, my light regiments will have 2 bases each of voltigeurs and carabiniers, only, which means I can already field 3 light regiments.

I'll probably revert the deployment of the voltigeurs and carabiniers seen on these pics. The most elite carabiniers should be at the bottom of the unit, to act as block troops. But anyway, this is just a temporary arrangement of the light regiments, so, no big deal.

I'm currently painting the last french units necessary to start playing (!). After that, I'll have to work on some additional british units for the next month or so, and then I'll be ready to field these armies!!

French Carabiniers à Pied

Back to expanding my French infantry. Here we have a unit of Carabiniers à Pied de La Infanterie Legére. These are produced by Hat.

As usual for Hat kits, these guys come in large numbers. 56 to be exact. Enough to do a full regiment of 4 bases and still plenty left to come up with 12 skirmish bases.

I may use 8 bases, aligned together as shown below, to represent a small unit:

3 skirmish bases in front of the regiment, to represent mixed order:

My plan is to build more representative light regiments, using a mix of carabiniers, voltigeurs and chasseurs. The historical proportions were 1/1/4 in a regiment, respectively, but since I'm only using 4 bases per standard unit, I'll do mine with 1 base of carabiniers, 1 of voltigeurs and the remaining 2 of chasseurs.

This is going to take a while, though. The voltigeurs are already being painted, by I've got no kits of chasseurs yet, so, for now, I'll stick to 2 light regiments, each with 2 bases of carabiniers and 2 of voltiguers.

Imperial Shrine of the Aquila

As I was painting my french carabiniers last week, I took some time to also work on the newest acquisition for our Club, the GW Imperial Shrine of the Aquila.

I added the base, made of thick cardboard, carved the stones on the sidewalk and added some texture on the inside to represent debris. Some algae was also included to help boost the "long-forsaken" visual I was after here.

As we can attest, Mankind's faith in the Emperor keeps the lights burning, despite the poor condition of these ancient ruins...
